Evaluation of the Characteristic Voltage for Nb/AlO_x/Nb Josephson Junctions

Abstract(in English) The characteristic voltage V_c of Josephson junctions, which is defined as a product of the critical current I_c and normal-state resistance R_n is a key parameter in the electronics applications and also in the Josephson-device physics. We propose a precise method for evaluating the characteristic voltage V_c of superconductor-insulator-superconductor-type Josephson junctions. Statistical data for Nb/AlO_x/Nb junctions fabricated by using the AIST standard Nb technology are presented. The average of the experimental V_c was approximately 1.7 mV at 4.2 K, 75% of the predicted value by the Ambegaokar-Baratoff theory. The main cause of the discrepancy between the experiment and theory is not clear at the moment.
