Microwave Response of Bi-2212 Long Intrinsic Josephson Junctions

Abstract(in English) Microwave response properties of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_<8+x> long intrinsic Josephson junctions have been experimentally and theoretically investigated. we fabricated a mesa structure consisting of 14 junctions with 50 μm long and 4 μm wide, and observed the microwave-induced steps in the I-V characteristics of the mesa under the irradiation with microwaves in the range from 6.8 to 7.87 GHz. The step voltages were proportional to the square root of the microwave power. This implies that the steps are produced by the motion of fluxons created by the microwaves. the Josephson frequency corresponding to the maximum step voltage was estimated as 570 GHz. Moreover, the step voltage decreased with increasing temperature. This can be explained by the decrease of the Swihart velocity related to the Fiske resonance. A numerical simulation using the coupled sine-Gordon equations for long intrinsic junctions under microwave irradiation shows the relationship between the microwave-induced steps and plasma resonance. The simulation obtained the power dependence of the step voltage similar to the experimental result. These facts suggested that the observed steps were generated by the plasma resonance excited by the irradiated microwaves.
