Abstract(in English) | In the next generation network, where heterogeneous access systems converge, a mobile terminal is required to select an appropriate access system out of the several available access systems. Some literature exists aiming to support the handover within heterogeneous networks, i.e. a handover trigger for the vertical handover, although these schemes are unsuitable for a battery-powered mobile terminal. Reducing the power consumption of the mobile terminal is one of the most important challenges involved in realizing the practical vertical handover. In this paper, we propose a handover support method using service area maps in a network server for the vertical handover, in order to conserve the battery of a mobile terminal. The proposed handover support method consists of two schemes, one of which is the efficient service area map certain scheme, while the other is a network interface turn-on trigger from the network server. In the proposed method, service are maps are efficiently compiled in the network server with the assistance of mobile terminals. Using the service area maps, the network server informs a mobile terminal of a list of the available access systems vbased on the location of the mobile terminal. A mobile terminal can performs a battery-saving vertical handover due to the realistic service are maps and the location-based network interface turn-on trigger by the network server. The drawbacks and advantages of the proposed scheme are also considered in this paper. |
