Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) With the remarkable improvement in functional brain imaging techniques, there has been a lot of researches trying to explore the brain mechanisms of visual functions, because it may be a clue for revealing aspects of consciousness. During subjects looking at diamond-shaped multistable stimulus, subjects experience striking transitions between some competing percepts while the physical stimulus remains the same. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we compared brain activities during multistable and monostable perceptions presenting a diamond changing its width and localized brain areas associated with the perceptual transitions. Analyses were carried out using Brain Voyager and statistical parametric mapping (SPM2) softwares. Although there were individual differences, significant differential activations were commonly observed at some regions in the prefrontal and parietal lobes suggesting the involvement of a distributed network among these regions.
