Development of an Integrated Inductor for Impedance Matching on the Fully Integrated Silicon Smart Microsensors

Abstract(in English) The complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) transmitters and the on-chip antennas for fully integrated silicon smart microsensors have been developed in our previous works. The fabricated CMOS transmitters and integrated antennas were packaged with subminiature series A (SMA) connectors for electrical connection and sending out the generated signal. The received power of the dipole antenna (Anritsu MP534A) analyzed with a spectrum analyzer (HP8590D) was -44dBm (39nW) at a distance of 3 cm. The output impedance has been well matched by inserting surface-mounted device (SMD) inductors (series L, 27nH) between the CMOS transmitter and the antenna. After the matching procedure, the VCO output, more than 5m signal transmission from the microchip antenna has been observed. Finally, the SMD inductor was exchanged to the integrated inductors for impedance matching. Therefore, the CMOS transmitters and on-chip antennas were packaged on the same chip by wire bonding without SMA connector. In this paper, the development of the integrated inductors that will be integrated on silicon smart microsensors is presented.
