Abstract(in English) | EBG (Electromagnetic Band-Gap) structures composed of metal patches arranged at small intervals have been studied to apply to antennas. The EBG structure features to have the frequency-band-rejection characteristics, and it may reduce the undesired radiation of electromagnetic waves. On the other hand, as a microstrip antenna (MSA) has a finite ground plane, the edge diffraction of the MSA affects the radiation patterns as ripples and back radiation. So, in order to reduce the undesired radiation, EBG structures can be applied to MSAs. This paper describes the radiation properties of a rectangular MSA located by mushroom-type EBG structures. Based on the calculated results, it is shown that the directive gain of the MSA with EBG structures is higher than the directive gain of the MSA without EBG structures. The improvement of the directive gain owing to the effect of EBG is 2.1dB at the condition that EBG row is arranged parallel to the H-plane at both sides of MSA. We also evaluate the effects of the distance between the EBG structures and the rectangular MSA on radiation properties of the MSA. It is found that the distance obtained the maximum directive gain is about 0.6λ in case of the number of EBG rows is 2 to 4. The effects of the EBG arrangement on radiation properties are also discussed. The optimum distance at the condition that EBG row is arranged parallel to the E-plane at both sides.of MSA is wider than that EBG row is arranged parallel to the H-plane. Finally, in order to verify the calculated results, the MSA with three EBG rows are arranged parallel to the H-plane is. fabricated. Since the experimental results coincide with the calculated results, the ca1culatedresults have been verified. |
