Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In order to clarify jaw-movement mechanism, we have been developing an autonomous jaw-movement simulator, JSN/3A, with a life-like structure and control scheme. In chewing movement, several reflexes using periodontal mechanoreceptors are known to occur during biting phase. Among them, periodontal masseteric reflex occurring immediately after tooth contact is of particular importance for chewing functions. This reflex is known to have two different phases, inhibitory phase followed by excitatory phase. Their detailed functions in chewing, however, are still unknown. In an attempt to clarify them, we reproduced this reflex on JSN/3A using data of a 3-D bite-force sensor mounted on the upper first molars. Empirical results suggested that the inhibitory phase tended to reduce a rapid increase of the bite force immediately after tooth contact, while the excitatory phase tended to accelerate the increase of the bite force after the inhibitory phase.
