Abstract(in English) | We developed an eye typing input system using voluntary eye movements toward screen button. While conventional interface uses input actions with a certain duration of fixation at the target, our system asks users to generate saccades and fixate a large screen button area located beneath of the display as soon as they find a target as the intended character. A total of five subjects participated in the experiment to evaluate the system performance. The result showed that the error rates were 3.7 percents in average. The average typing speed was 30 characters per minutes for the fastest person and 13.8 characters per minutes for the slowest person. The error rates obtained in this study were lower than those obtained by previous study using gaze input. The typing speed was also relatively faster than other studies using gaze input (ranging from 10 to 12 characters per minute in average) and blink-based input (average 8 characters per minute). Also, we compared performance when visual feedback was given to the subject and concluded that fine adjustments to minimize the distance between the marker and the true position of eye fixation was important for taking its advantage. |
