Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | We have been conducting a series of researches to improve shosaiyomi of Kanji characters. In this report, we deal with Joyo (common use) Kanji. We mainly used the word familiarity database as an index when selecting the words to explain Kanji characters. In this way we developed a new set of shosaiyomi for 939 Joyo Kanji characters (since 1006 Educational Kanji characters are subtracted). To evaluate it, we conducted a Kanji writing test with university students as subjects. As a result, a set of shosaiyomi comprising words with higher familiarity gained a significantly higher average correct rate than another set comprising of words with lower familiarity. Thus, it becomes clear that the word familiarity database is an effective index when developing easy-to-understand shosaiyomi of Joyo Kanji for university students. In this test, we also examined another hypothesis that some words are easier to understand when presented as verbs than presented as nouns. However, the result did not support it statistically. |
