Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The GPS radio occultation (RO) sounding technique that uses signals transmitted by the GPS satellite has evolved as an important global atmospheric observing technology. This research compares atmospheric profiles from GPS RO with radiosonde-retrieved profiles. Temperature and water vapor profiles from CHAMP satellite mission are compared with those calculated from radiosonde sounding over Western Australia. Results show that the differences between atmospheric temperatures derived from the low earth orbiting satellite data and measured by radiosondes are less than 1 K for altitudes below 14 km and less than 3 K in the vicinity of the tropopause. For water vapor profiles, the differenct is less than -0.4 hPa in the lower troposphere and less than +0.4 hPa in the upper troposphere.
