On the Linear Characteristic of HyRAL16

Abstract(in English) HyRAL16 is a common-key cipher designed by Hirata of Laurel Intelligent Systems Inc. in 2006. A data block size is 128bit, and a secret key size can be chosen among 128bit, 192bit, and 256bit. The designer says the advantages of HyRAL16 are the simplicity of software implementation and high-speed encryption because it consists of only 3 simple elements, byte permutation, XOR, and rotation. In this report, we evaluate linear characteristics of HyRAL16 as it has not been analyzed so far. However, it is impossible to evaluate linear probability of HyRAL16 since there are some encryption elements without an independent key addition when HyRAL16 is divided into elements which linear probability can be evaluated. Therefore, we propose an evaluation technique, which overcomes such a impossibility of evaluation. As a result, we show that it is reasonable for HyRAL16 to cut off some encryption elements without an independent key addition to evaluate an upper bound of linear characteristics. Our evaluation with an 8bit data truncation shows that the upper bound of maximum linear characteristics of HyRAL16 is 2^<-23.2>, and the upper bound cannot be less than 2^<-46.5>.
