Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Identification of individual vocalizations was studied with Japanese macaques. What information is a key for Japanese macaques to identify individual vocalizations? The relative importance of characteristics of a vocal tract (resonance property) and glottal source (fundamental frequency and temporal pitch change) information in macaque's vocalizations were investigated. At first, two male macaques were trained to discriminate another two macaque's vocalizations with GO/NOGO operant conditioning procedure in order to examine if they could identify individual vocalizations or not. Macaques succeeded in discriminating identification of individual vocalizations. After that, synthesized stimuli that the characteristic of vocal tract resonance and the glottal source information of macaque A's vocalization were exchanged with those of another macaque B's vocalization were presented as a probe tests. Results suggested that they use resonance property and fundamental frequency as cues compared to temporal pitch change.
