Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We propose a new method by which small birefringence of a fiber is measured accurately. In our method, a linearly polarized light is launched into the test fiber at various angles and the output light power though a polarizer is measured. Absolute value of the cosine of the phase delay due to birefringence is calculated from the maximum value of the extinction ratio. Ambiguity in retardation associated with angular function is removed by measurements at two adjacent wavelengths. Birefringence of an optical fiber whose principal axis direction is unknown is measured with a high precision by newly proposed method.
