Polling-based mobility control for a unified micro-cellular network

Abstract(in English) This paper presents superiority of polling-based packet transfer to the conventional contention-based one in a unified micro-cellular network. The contention-based handover requires inefficient and large overlapping of micro-cells, and the hidden terminal problems triggers frequent collision in hand-over. On the other hand, LMC (Logical Macro-cell) consisting of several adjacent micro-cells and a set of identical polling to every micro-cell in LMC allows high-speed packet transfer even to fast terminals. The proposed system uses PON (Passive Optical Network) as the terrestrial network of which broadcasting capability is useful for distributed control of the packet transfer. Two-layered LMC is also proposed for the efficient switchover of LMC to allow smooth packet transfer over whole micro-cells. The distributed control on every BS also contributes to the scalability of the unified micro-cellular network by reducing the processing load of the central nodes.
