Evaluation of Packet-Forwarding Scheme on TCP-Transmission Performance in Intra-Evolved UTRAN Handover

Abstract(in English) In intra-evolved UTRAN handover, the buffered downlink packets which can not be delivered to the mobile stations in the source base station are forwarded to target base stations in order to reduce the number of lost packets. In the target base station, the packets forwarded from the source base station would be overtaken by those received from its upper node. This results in out-of-sequence packet arrivals in the mobile station and thus causes significant degradation of TCP throughput. In order to prevent this problem, the packet reordering is performed in the mobile station. Though the impacts of the packet forwarding and the packet reordering on the TCP-transmission performance should be carefully considered for the system design, these have not been well investigated. In this paper, therefore, the behavior of the packet forwarding and its impact on the TCP-transmission performance are clarified by computer simulations. From the simulation results, the parameter settings of the packet reordering are studied and then a problem related to the packet forwarding on the TCP performance is discussed.
