Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Video-mediated communication systems which support multi-person conversation are spreading. Most systems on the market, however, do not convey eye contact information and may affect users' communication behaviors. In this research, we analyze the relation between nonverbal behaviors in conversation and "spatial consistency" of the video mediated communication system. For this purpose, we observe the conversation scenes and record video sequences and analyze the two conditions: (1) eye-contact condition which supports participant mutual gaze, and (2) inverse eye-contact condition in which the information of "person A's gaze to B" is represented as the information of "person C is gazed by person A." The video sequences are analyzed in terms of gaze-direction and turn-taking. The analysis suggests that (1) in eye-contact condition, users behave in the same way as in face-to-face communication, e.g. speaker tend to look at one of the hearers at the end of his/her utterances, while, (2) in inverse eye-contact condition, speaker do not look at the other hearers at the end of the utterances.
