Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) There are various facial impression words such as "face likegourd," "lip like cod roe," and so on, describing facial features concisely appropriately. Some of them are vague and some are concrete. This paper proposed a hierarchical classification of shapes of facial parts as the method to classify various facial impression words systematically. Firstly, coordinates of feature points in each facial part are analyzed by the principal component analtsis. Obtained principal component scores are used as parameters to carry out the hierarchical classification. Classified results will coincide with the classification of shapes of facial part. We have collected facial impression words corresponding to a typical shape generated in each hierarchy. Then facial impression words are assigned to each typical shape. This means the quantitative correspondence between set of principal components representing typical shape and facial impression words. Experiments for the shapes of eyes and mouth show the usefulness of the proposed method.
