Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Aiming at the nondestructive testing of the living trees to detect the existence and degree of the decay, tomographic reconstructions of the wood cross-sectional sound speed image were investigated by using acoustic travel time data acquired at the circumference of the timbers. Based on the straight ray propagation model, smoothed path algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) was introduced which made it possible to reconstruct the image from the several tens of small number of path data. In particular, analytical method for the sound speed anisotropy caused by the annual ring was presented, furthermore, the tomographic algorithm including the anisotropic characteristics was demonstrated. Test examinations were made using the 445 mm diameter Japanese cedar specimen having an artificial decay region. Wideband piezoelectric transducers with the bandwidth in several tens kHz range were used. As a result of image reconstruction using 56 observation path data, precision of the reconstructed sound speed value in decay region was satisfactory without the damage caused by the sound speed anisotropy of the wood.
