Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Operating Systems become huge and complicate, so that it is difficult to make the whole system fault torelant. There is a multi-server operating system that introduces a recovery-opriented approach to improve availability. The recovery-opriented approach splits the system into small subsystems and recovers indivisual subsystems quickly. However, the method of failure detection in the operating system is not efficient, because only timeout strategy exists toward infinite loop or dead lock and it is late to detect the failure for fast recovery. We have proposed a new fast failure detection employing the characteristic that device drivers on a normal condition finish its task at the same position in the program. A multi-server operating system can improve availability using our proposed method.
