Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The EM algorithm has been applied to the MAP detection, because the latter requires a prohibitive amount of computational complexity and the former can reduce such complexity to a feasible amount by recursive approximation. Applications of the EM algorithm to mobile communications can be classified into two categories. One regards transmitted signals as hidden variables and recursively performs MAP-based channel estimation. The other regards channel impulse responses as hidden variables and recursively performs MAP-based signal detection of the transmitted signals. This report compares these two categories and investigates the MAP detection following the former for OFDM mobile communications. As for its channel estimation, conventional schemes using the EM algorithm assume the random walk model as a process equation for the channel impulse response, and thus have insufficient tracking ability to fading fluctuation under a fast fading condition. To improve the tracking ability, this report proposes a new channel estimation method for the EM algorithm that employs a differential model having the first and high order differentials of the channel impulse response with respect to time. Computer simulations under the fast fading condition demonstrate that the proposed method is much superior in packet error rate to the conventional EM algorithm employing the random walk model.
