Abstract(in English) | Since 2004, we have been developing a GPS based navigation system for persons with visual impairment and conducting researches to put this system to practical use. The route guidance function of this system has reached satisfactory level due to the improvements of GPS receiver and our map matching algorithm. To use the route guidance in real time during walking, however, it is essential to transplant this system to PDA. In addition, you had better not use this navigation system in the place surrounded with high-rise buildings until a portable GPS receiver equipped with the function to correct the multipath error is developed. Through this study, we have recognized the importance of followings before walking; route guidance, presentation of facility information around the selected route, and provision of tools to strengthen user's geo-literacy, even more than the need for provision of guidance during walking. Then, we have created a "Virtual Walk" function and built it into this navigation system. The virtual walk function was received well by our test subjects. By using this function as though it were a game without setting the destination, a user will naturally improve one's geo-literacy and get to know the location of streets and facilities. |
