Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The goal of the development of Intelligent Wheelchair "HITOMI" is to provide an autonomous wheelchair for use by visually impaired. The wheelchair is a motored vehicle equipped with a video camera, two units of range sensors and a computer. A user sits on the wheelchair, then puts in the starting-point and the destination as prepared on a pre-recorded route, along which the wheelchair runs. "HITOMI" was demonstrated at The 2005 World Exposition (EXPO 2005) in Aichi, Japan. About 300 visitors including visually impaired people and leg-disabled people experienced riding on the wheelchair. Some participants (riders) expressed their interests in using the wheelchair in their future lives. Two sets of "HITOMI" are working at "NAZARE" home for the blind and "NARA NNISSEI EDEN NO SONO" home.
