Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A new amplitude modulation scheme and its transmitter architecture are proposed. It modulates a constant envelope radio frequency (RF) signal, which may be the carrier wave, with pulse-width modulated (PWM) amplitude signal by on-off keying as "burst width modulation" at the final stage. Through a band-pass filter, the burst-width modulated signal is transformed to an amplitude modulated transmitting signal whose envelope is proportional to the duty ratio. The final stage amplifier can be operated in saturation region giving high power efficiency at any time since the envelopes of input signals is constant as EER (Envelope Elimination and Restoration), or zero. In this report, the signal processing of the proposed scheme is shown and the spurious characteristics as well as the criterion for selecting the PWM carrier frequency are discussed theoretically. It is expected that this scheme is also applicable to arbitrary modulation, band-limited PSK, multilevel QAM, and etc. by using not the carrier wave but a phase-modulated signal as the constant envelope RF signal going to be burst-width modulated.
