Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The scanning input method is a widely used augmentative and alternative communication tool mainly for people with severe physical disabilities such as ALS. In this report, an enhancement for the automatic error correction method proposed earlier is described. A dramatical improvement to the accuracy is obtained by introducing a model for the switch timing distribution of users. A Monte Carlo simulation of text input shows the advantage of the new model. In addition, actual text input experiments were conducted using a scanning input system which implements the proposed automatic error correction method. As a result, it is shown that the system successfully corrected a large portion of errors for healthy subjects, and improved the character correct rate from 77.7% to 97.7% for an ALS patient.
