Excitation process in blue-electroluminescent BaAl_2S_4:Eu thin films

Abstract(in English) We have investigated excitation process in oxygen-free BaAl_2S_4:Eu electroluminescent (EL) thin-films having high crystallinity. EL wave form clarifies firstly that blue EL in BaAl_2S_4:Eu thin-film is caused by hot hole excitation. On the contrary, hot electron excitation process has been well known in thin-film EL (TFEL) devices such as ZnS:Mn. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra and first principles calculation revealed that the valence band of BaAl_2S_4 host consists of S3p, S3s, Al3s and Al3p orbital. The electronic structure indicates that Eu^<2+> ions activated in BaAl_2S_4 are well localized, and supports the unique excitation process in which hot holes excite the Eu^<2+> centers effectively in BaAl_2S_4 host.
