Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper shows the degrees to which hearing ability and language ability influence the spoken word intelligibility of aged people. Thirty-two subjects (14 males and 18 females) participated in a spoken word intelligibility test with an adiometory test, the vocabulary test in Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition (WAIS-III), and 100RAKAN (Reading Ability test for KANji words). The subjects' ages ranged from 64 to 83 years. The results showed that word familiarity and presentation signal to noise ratio (SNR) had significant effects, but revealed no effects of the interaction between them. Furthermore, the main effects of hearing ability (or level of hearing loss), WAIS-III vocabulary scores and RAKAN scores of the subjects, were significant, and the interaction between these abilities and word familiarity, and between these abilities and the SNR were not significant. These results suggest that the SNR, word familiarity, hearing ability, and language ability could independently affect spoken word intelligibility.
