Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this study, we examined the effect of irregular interruption on the auditory continuity illusion in 2 experiments. We used a 500-Hz tone as an inducee, and a 500-Hz, 1/3 octave bandpass noise as an inducer. The level of the inducer was fixed at 60dB SPL, while that of the inducee was varied at each trial depending on participant's response. There were two conditions, in which the intervals between adjacent inducer and inducer were fixed (the regular condition) or changed randomly (the irregular condition). In Exp.1, the continuity limits (CL; a inducee level at which the participant's judgment changed from continuous to discontinuous) were measured using the up-down method. The mean CL in the regular condition was significantly higher than that in the irregular condition. In Exp. 2, discrimination thresholds between illusory and physical continuity were measured under the regular and irregular conditions using 2-interval forced-choice task. The mean threshold in the regular condition was significantly higher than that in the irregular condition. These results indicated that the irregular interruption enhanced the auditory continuity illusion.
