Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this study, the relationship between the psychophysiological influences caused to mothers by infant crying and its relationship to maternal stress was investigated. The heart rates, skin conductance changes and diastolic blood pressure of the subjects was measured. The results show that while infant crying is a stimulus which heightens the negative emotions of mothers, mothers concentrated their attention on infant crying and their heart rates decreased. Regarding psychophysiological characteristics, no differences were found in the psychophysiological reactions of mothers with high and low maternal stress. The diastolic blood pressure rose in mothers who reported an increase in depression and anxiety after listening to infant crying. In addition, mothers with a strong degree of discomfort to infant crying showed large skin conductance changes and heart rates initially decreased but soon returned to the control level conditions. These tendencies suggest that these mothers had a low tolerance for infant crying.
