Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Brain mechanisms of attentional effects on the detection of sounds were studied by EEC recording from the subjects performing auditory oddball tasks. The subjects (5 right-handed male students, mean age of 22.2) were requested to attend either the left or the right ear during oddball tasks in which they counted the number of deviant stimuli during presentation of 160 standard (100-ms duration, 10-ms rise-fall time) and 40 deviant stimuli (50-ms duration, 10-ms rise-fall time) evenly delivered to both ears through earphones. The frequency of the stimuli was set to 1kHz for both ears (same condition) or 1kHz for one ear and 2kHz for the other ear (different condition). For control, distraction was made by calculation of numbers during the tasks. The event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded by international 10-20 system using a 16-channel EEG recorder. Significant differences between ERPs for relevant and irrelevant stimuli were observed in the frontal, temporal and parietal areas but not in the occipital area. Negative shifts of ERP for relevant stimuli and positive shifts for irrelevant stimuli were observed at 300-600ms after the onset of stimulus and the amounts of the shifts were hemispherically asymmetric, especially in the temporal areas. The effects of attention on these ERP components were discussed in terms of facilitation and inhibition in the auditory cortex.
