Video Coding Efficiency Improvement Using Variable Strength Pre-filter

Abstract(in English) This paper proposes a method to improve video coding efficiency by applied variable strength pre-filters to a pair of input frames and its reference frames. Since high frequency components in both reference frames and input frames are eliminated by the pre-filter, residual of inter frame prediction can be decreased and coding efficiency improvement can be achieved. In decoding process, there is a mismatch between an encoder and a decoder since a conventional video decoder in which the filters are not applied to the reference frames is used, however, PSNR is improved in low bit rate sequences with an appropriate filter strength selection. This paper also introduces a filter strength decision method using average of motion vectors and average of prediction residuals at each frame. With the filter strength decision method, approximately 4 dB PSNR improvement in maximum and 0.26 dB PSNR improvement in average can be achieved at SDTV MPEG-2 2Mbps CBR sequences. This method is efficient for video quality improvement of low bit rate recording in such as DVD recorders.
