Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper describes the direction we are taking in our OCR technology to expand its industrial applications. Our approach is based on the concept, "Towards invisible OCR Technology in the information life cycle." For our discussion, the information life cycle consists of four processes: input, storage & retrieval, edit & reuse, and output. Though in general our purpose is use of OCR as data-entry to reduce the cost of the input process, we also discuss the other processes. Our industrial OCR applications are described in this paper. First, we describe our digital camera OCR for financial uses that is a basic input process enabling high-speed recognition of many kinds of forms at teller windows of banks. Second, we report how searchable-PDF generation has been achieved in a scanner that enables a search function as a retrieval process for scanning color document images. Third, we developed automatic generation of synchronized content from lecture movies and presentation slides for e-learning application as an edit & reuse process. Last, as an output process, we developed electronic application form generation for the Internet. This technology generates electronic forms from colored paper forms such that the display image has the same as appearance and color layout as that of the paper form. Its purpose is to unify document management of both paper and electronic forms. Effectively, general users will not realize that OCR technology is being used in these storage & retrieval, edit & reuse, and output processes. We will continue to expand invisible OCR applications in future work.
