Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Two vocabulary lists (JACET 8000 and SVL 12000) specifically developed for Japanese learners of English classify vocabulary words into several levels based on some independent criteria. Ordinate's automated spoken English test (SET-10) used to have a vocabulary task called Opposites, where the test-taker was asked to say a word that has the opposite meaning or concept of the word presented aurally. The vocabulary items used in this task have item difficulty indices that were empirically calculated using Item Response Theory from English learners' test performance data from around the world. We investigate what kind of relationships exist between the item difficulties calculated from non-native test-takers' performances worldwide and the two vocabulary lists developed in Japan.
