Union Bound for Average BER Depending on Spatial Correlation due to Direction-of-Arrival Distributions in MIMO Channels

Abstract(in English) This report analyzes the union bound for average BER depending on spatial correlation due to direction-of-arrival (DOA) distributions in MIMO radio channels, and investigates characteristics of the union bound. Since receive antennas at a base station (BS) for a mobile uplink communication are located on a rooftop and not surrounded with obstacles, angular spread of DOA is considerably limited. Therefore, the MIMO channel is spatially correlated among the receive antennas, which depends on the distribution of the angular spread. The characteristics of such spatial correlation have already been analyzed on condition that DOA is subject to the Gaussian distribution. However, the real DOA distribution has been reported to be the Laplace or Power distribution. Thus, the dependence of the union bound for average BER on the DOA distribution needs to be investigated. In this context, we derive the spatial correlation under the following three DOA distributions; the Gaussian distribution, and Laplace and Power distributions approximated as linear combinations of the Gaussian one. Then, the union bound for average BER based on pairwise error probability (PEP) under this spatial correlation is derived analytically, and computer simulations demonstrate that the union bound is very close to a simulation result.
