Generation of Natural Three-Dimensional Image by Directional Display : Solving Accommodation-Vergence Conflict

Abstract(in English) Conventional three-dimensional displays do not satisfy all physiological factors of human three-dimensional perception completely so that there are two problems: one is accommodation-vergence conflict and the other is imperfect motion parallax. Super multi-view (SMV) display technique and high-density directional (HDD) display technique have the possibility to solve these two problems to realize natural three-dimensional displays. In this paper, these two techniques are described. The way of retinal image formation by the HDD display is explained to show that very smooth motion parallax is obtained by this technique. The measurement results of accommodation responses to the HDD display are shown, and the enlargement of the depth range in which the accommodation works properly is shown to be explained by considering the enlargement of the depth of field of an eye imaging system depending on the ray directivity. The development targets for the natural three-dimensional displays are described.
