Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This study developed a system that synthesizes a higher-order impression such as gracefulness of the face by an impression transfer vector method. Facial pictures were mathematically represented in high-dimensional vectors by separating the shape and texture information. Variation in appearance was coded in a small number of parameters by applying principal component analysis (PCA), and thus a morphable model of face patterns was constructed in terms of these parameters. Based on preliminary psychological experiments conducted by applying a semantic differential method and factor analysis, some of the parameters corresponding to specific principal components derived by PCA were found sensitive to the impression in focus, such as the gracefulness of the face. The impression transfer vector was then defined using only the selected parameters and was applied to image manipulation. The obtained results clearly indicated that the impression transfer vector defined by the selected components could modulate facial gracefulness.
