An H-Plane Waveguide Eight-Port Hybrid and Its Application to a Directional Coupler with Variable Coupling Factor

Abstract(in English) This paper suggests an eight-port hybrid consisting of four cruciform H-plane 3-dB hybrids connected with each other and presents some circuit configurations and their optimization results. In addition to the compact structure and fully planar structure, the present eight-port hybrids are marked by very high power handling capability. Therefore, this circuit would be useful for not only a comparator in a monopulse radar system but also four-way power combining / dividing in a super-high power microwave system such as a linear accelerator. Next, a directional coupler with variable coupling factor is proposed using the above eight-port hybrid. The coupling factor can be controlled from 0 to ∞ dB by appropriately adjusting the phase relation of reflectors connected at four ports isolated from one another. Moreover, a broadband H-plane waveguide magic T is demonstrated using the working principle.
