Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We report the realization of a novel photonic defect mode in a single cholesteric liquid crystal material, based on a structural defect induced by laser-assisted local modification of the helix. Upon irradiating an ultra-fast laser on a photo-polymerizable cholesteric liquid crystal, the helix elongated and became stable against heat. When an unpolymerized cholesteric liquid crystal region was placed between two polymerized cholesteric liquid crystal regions, a photonic defect mode appeared in the selective reflection band of the cholesteric liquid crystal material, depending on the contrast in the helix pitch lengths.
