Image Enhancement and Zooming by Morphological Operations in Laplacian Pyramid Representation

Abstract(in English) Degital image enlargement is equivalent to increasing its sampling frequency. Thus, it is necessary to estimate unknown high frequency components which is lost in sampling process for recovery sharpness of edegs in original images. For this estimation, an image enlargement method based on Laplacian pyramid representation has been proposed. This method estimates a finer scale laplacian by a non-linear operation with thresholding. However, the threshold is constant for entire image pixels, and then for many natural images, the effects of the non-linear operation only apear in a part of the image, where the amplitude of laplacian exceeds the threshold. Moreover, thresholding causes undesirable ringing components beside edges. In this report, we propose a new non-linear operator using morphological operations. The proposed method achives edge enhancement that does not depend on contrast of edges. Moreover, comparing with the thresholding operation, the ringing component is well suppressed.
