A Study on reliable multicast for IPTV services

Abstract(in English) Rich content delivery services over IP network have become widespread. IPTV services are also considered for re-transmitting digital terrestrial broadcasting. Every viewer should watch TV programs over IP network without being affected by degradation of network quality. We propose a reliable delivery protocol for TV programs. In this protocol, original data packets and generated redundant packets are divided into two streams, which are a basic stream and an enhancement stream. They are sent separately. Whether receiving both of streams or only a basic stream is determined at each receiver based on its own receiving quality. When uncorrected packets are unfortunately occurred without receiving the enhancement stream, the receiver requests a server to send those packets again. In this paper we compare two method of response to requests from receivers. One method is to send both requested data packets and redundant packets of enhancement stream and the other is to send only redundant packets of enhancement stream. Experimental results show that our proposed protocol is reliable with less redundant packets.
