Field-assembled optical connector technology in aerial communication lines for FTTH

Abstract(in English) We have developed a new type of field-assembled optical connector which shortens the time required for each connection and allows even unskilled workers to install connections in the field. Our new connectors are composed of two pieces, a plug and a socket. We have developed two types of plugs, one which holds the drop cable and one which holds the optical fiber, and one type of socket, which holds the optical fiber. Insertion loss of these connectors was an average 0.25dB, with a maximum of less than 0.50dB, and they have achieved low losses. Moreover, they have been confirmed to possess sufficient mechanical and environmental characteristics for use in outdoor environments. We are confident that our new connectors provide an important technology that will meet increased demands for FTTH in the future.
