Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The use of electric household appliances and IT (information technology) are believed to increase the QOL and well-being of the people. The benefit of electronic devices for elderly people would be more evident than for younger people because it is assumed that such equipment would compensate for the decline of functional ability in the elderly. However, there has been only very limited research on the actual usage and influence of such devices in the elderly. The purpose of this study was to clarify the usage of IT and electronic devices in the elderly and to classify the participants from the use of the electronic and IT devices. In addition to physical function, psychological function and cognitive function, we asked the actual usage of representative electric devices. Firstly, the IT and electronic devices were classified into three categories of "Classical household appliances", "Quasi-household appliances+ATM" and "IT and digital devices". Secondly, the participants were classified into five groups of "advanced", "developing", "stagnation", "conservative" and "non-use".
