Investigation of Inclined-Pad Type Head for High Transfer-rate Cylindrical Magnetic Storage System

Abstract(in English) A magnetic recording head with an inclined-pad for cylindrical magnetic storage media of 1-inch (25.4mm) diameter using a perpendicular double-layered medium with a CoPtCr-SiO_2 recording layer was investigated. The inclined-pad-type head had a trailing pad formed on the trailing edge of the head, which had a single-pole type (SPT) writer and a giant magneto-resistive (GMR) reader, and an inclined pad formed on the leading edge of the head, which protruded in the thickness direction compared with the trailing pad, for generating an air-bearing force. The inclined-pad-type slider was fabricated and its fly ability was examined with a read/write tester. Its flying characteristics had almost the same linear velocity dependence as the theoretical design, and are thought to be a potentially valuable component of cylindrical magnetic storage systems.
