Evaluating Probing Traffic Density on Distributed Router/Link Level Communication Quality Monitoring

Abstract(in English) Recently, network measurement techniques have been attracting much attention, as various applications, such as voice and video communications, which are critical for communication quality, have been commonly used in IP networks. But, it is quite difficult for end users and network managers to efficiently locate communication quality degradation points, because existing MIB is not sufficient to determine which link has caused quality degradation. We have already proposed router/link level communication quality monitoring method which is based on ICMP probing technique to routers. We have evaluated our method from a viewpoint of cost effectiveness, and we have shown that our method can monitor each link with approximately optimal number of probing packets and probing traffic cost. However, there is another problem that the measurement error degrades when too much traffic of probe packets passes through the network links. So, we evaluate traffic density of probing packets, and we show simulation results that our method can reduce maximum number of probing packets passing through the links in the network by 1/4.
