Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Previous studies have shown that binocular rivalry can be affected by visual context of surrounding stimuli. Several studies have reported that the target contradictory to surround is predominant (contrast effect), but others have reported predominance of coherent target (assimilation effect). To account for the discrepancies among these studies, we manipulated the retinal eccentricity and the duration time to examine effects of visual surround in rivalry of orientation (Experiment 1) and motion direction (Experiment 2). In results, the contrast effect of orientation increased with eccentricity but the strong contrast effect of motion direction was found irrespective of eccentricity. When the duration time becomes longer, the contrast effect of both orientation and motion direction decreased. The difference of the effects of eccentricity between orientation and motion direction indicates that spatial context processes within each perceptual module affect binocular rivalry and the effects of duration indicate that assimilation in binocular rivalry needs longer time.
