| Abstract(in English) | The preference of sentence interpretation has been examined mainly with subject relative clause for syntactically ambiguous sentences, and it is shown that the high attachment interpretation is preferred by native Japanese speakers. However, the processing road of subject and object relative clause is different from each other. In this study, we used syntactically ambiguous sentences with object relative clause and examined whether relative clause types have an effect on the preference of sentence interpretation. As a result of Experiment 1 , the object relative clause preferred low attachment interpretation, but the subject relative did not. However, one type of stimuli was scrambled (the subject relative), but the other type was canonical sentence (object relative). Thus, in Experiment 2, scrambled sentences were used for both relative clause types. The results of Experiment 2 showed that there was no difference of preference between the subject and the object relative clauses. This indicates that the word order have an effect on the preference of interpretation, but the relative clause type does not. Canonical sentences prefer the low attachment interpretation. Kamide & Mitchell (1997), however, showed that high attachment preference was preferred using canonical sentences. Considering these findings and scrambled sentence processing model (Muraoka et al., 2004), it is sentence reanalysis that have an effect on the preference of interpretation. If sentences need reanalysis, it may be that the high attachment preference is enhanced, because processor have to reexamine the structure and that principles like Predicate Proximity (Gibson et al., 1996) are taken into account. |
