Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) American JFL learners' processing of NPs has been investigated in Japanese sentences such as Teraki-san-wa kyoojyu-ga dorama-o/hoomudorama-o/kuji-no-dorama-o mita to itta. 'Teraki said that the professor saw the drama/serial drama/9 o'clock drama'. Kashiwagi and Nakayama (2005) showed how differently native and non-native speakers utilize their resources, especially working memory, in reading. The present study is a follow-up study on lexical processing. The results suggest that JFL learners consumed much of their working memory decoding the object NPs in the previous study, but they also spent time in structure building, especially, when they created new clauses.
