Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We are examining the application of a Ku-band mobile satellite communication system as a means to offer broadband communication services, for example, the Internet connection service, to passengers in a train. To secure uninterrupted communication using the satellite, we are considering application of terrestrial repeaters, generally known as gap-fillers, as shadowing countermeasure technologies against longer obstacles such as tunnels. To design the gap-filler for the train that runs at high speed in the tunnel, the wideband propagation characteristic in the tunnel should be clarified. This paper describes the measured results and analysis on the wideband propagation characteristic in the railway tunnel. The results are as follows. 1) The degradation of the reception level doesn't depend on the tunnel shape. 2) The propagation loss in the vicinity of the transmission antenna is smaller than the free space path loss. 3) The degradation of the reception level by the presence of the oncoming train is the sum of the degradation due to the tunnel itself and the degradation due to the train. 4) The delay spread is insignificant when the high gain antenna is used for the receiving antenna.
