| Abstract(in English) | The most valuable lesson to learn in the last century is that qualitative safety techniques give only limited insight into the probability that a product will fail and that the likelihood of failure is not only determined by the product itself, but also by specific attributes of the organization making/developing the product. This view forced IEC to compile IEC 61508 as a standard related to functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems. IEC 61511, which is the process industrial sector standard of IEC 61508, defines how to implement functional safety of safety-instrumented systems (SIS). On the other hand, recently computer-based systems have been widely applied for achievement of safety functions. This general trend also accelerates use of quantitative safety analysis techniques involving elements of the entire lifecycle of the product beyond its development stage. Currently it looks like both qualitative and quantitative safety performance criteria are jumbled up. However, these criteria will soon be harmonized. Thus, it is strongly encouraged to conform to the standards for stakeholders including SIS manufactures and users, in order to ensure the validity of their overall safety lifecycle activities as well as to enhance their competitiveness on international scales. |
