Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recent neuroscience research has revealed that sleep is controlled by complicated interactions among many "sleep regulating neurons"' in the hypothalamus and brainstem. Here, we propose a neural network model consisting of these neurons on the basis of the new physiological findings. As a result, this model reproduces many physiological phenomena, such as 90-minute (NREM-REM) ultradian cycles as well as 24-hour sleep-wake cycles. Furthermore, activities of the model neurons mimic rough profiles of the actual neuronal discharge across sleep stage transition. This model will provide a novel framework for the quantitative understanding of the mechanisms regulating sleep and wakefulness.
