Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Sound duration is an important attribute of auditory perception. We investigated the neuronal activity of the auditory cortex in anesthetized guinea pigs for clarifying the discrimination mechanisms of sound duration. In this experiment, sequences of auditory stimuli were presented repeatedly to the subjects. These stimuli consisted of noise bursts with different durations, each of which were presented serially about ten times. Neuronal responses to the stimuli following the stimuli with the different duration were compared with those to the stimuli following the stimuli with a same duration. It was shown that the former off responses exhibited a significantly higher firing rate despite of no difference of on response. This result corresponds to a finding of event-related potentials that do not change at the onset of duration increasing stimuli but change at the offset of them. Our study experimentally revealed a possibility that off response is involved in the sound duration discrimination. These suggested that auditory cortex played an important role on temporal auditory perception.
